Through the years my statement changed. Maybe it did,
because a statement is only a state of mind at a certain time. When I decided
to dedicate myself to art as a professional artist, my main focus was on nature
and culture. Not just nature, but nature as the spiritual strength it holds
within. And culture as it came to me by our Surinamese poet Dobru reciting his
poem ‘Wan bon, someni wiwiri’ ( One tree, so many leaves ). It was about the
fascination for all different cultures, being part of my own Surinamese
culture. But then came a time when nature and culture were no issue anymore and
for years I stated that ‘Life is Art and Art is Life’. Through the years I became increasingly aware of
existing prejudices and barriers withholding talented women from becoming
professional artists in my developing country. This inspired me to realize an
interdisciplinary project ‘The strength of women’ consisting of a solo
exhibition, a short video-film and a booklet with three short stories. Then again, the multi-cultural Surinamese society
became essential in relation with the person I became, born, living and working
in this Dutch Caribbean country. Being a Surinamese, a Caribbean woman and
world citizen, I realized that I have a hybrid heritage and hybrid personality.
I started a research of the strength of hybridism. I realized that I am local,
‘splendid in isolation’, and of ‘a place out of time’ but on the other hand,
that the globalization with people traveling back and forth also is a basis for
hybridism. My focus has been on creating a true fusion between
visual art and the art of words. In doing so, the visual image should not be
subordinate to the story, or the other way around but it has to be a balanced
interplay between visual art and literature.
At the moment balance and harmony are the keywords.
Balance and harmony between visual art and the art of words; my work has to
communicate locally as well as internationally, even so I want to achieve a yin
yang harmony between realism and abstraction in one piece of art.
