Kenneth Flijders received his education at the ‘Nieuwe School voor Beeldende Kunsten’ in Suriname and at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica. He works as an artist and until 2015, as an art teacher at the Nola Hatterman Art Academy, Suriname.
Flijders is greatly inspired by elements and events from daily life in the multicultural Surinamese society. He also finds great pleasure in painting peaceful and pristine natural landscapes from our rich tropical rainforest. He is unequivocally attracted to the beauty of Surinamese nature and also has a special affinity for the old and historical. He is known to regularly incorporate historical themes and materials in his work. He occasionally repurposes shutters and doors from old deserted or condemned wooden buildings, into meaningful works of art.
The artist is also quite famous for his impressive large-scale paintings, sometimes historical, in which he depicts popular spots in Paramaribo’s down town area. As an artist fond of experimenting, Flijders works in several materials, styles and techniques, and has become quite well known for incorporating mahogany extract and natural palm fibers in his work.
In 2015 Kenneth Flijders was an artist-in-residence at the Tembe Art Studio (TAS) in Moengo in the district of Marowijne, Suriname.
Untill 2014 Visual Arts teacher at Nola Hatterman Art Academy in Paramaribo, Suriname.
In 1999, together with 4 colleague painters under the name of "Wan Nyun Mamanten" , Kenneth Flijders created a large group painting which was representative of the rush towards the new millennium at that time. This painting is on display at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport in Suriname.
