My greatest source of inspiration is the cycle of
life. In my work I use certain symbolisms to incorporate or portray this
repetitive cycle which keeps life going in our world. Of special significance
and therefore often recognizable in my work is the repetitive use of circles
often symbolizing the sun and the eternal cycle of life. The sun provides the
most important source of energy and is the positive force which gives us hope
and keeps us motivated to work towards a better future. I also use circles to emphasize
the female shape, symbolizing fertility which is again an essential element in
the cycle of life.
Birds, flowers, fuit, people, especially women and the
sun all have symbolic significance in the theme of my work. Life, energy,
freedom, fertility are portrayed with these symbols, but also with the colors I
choose. The use of colors and the ultimate subjects in my art are furthermore
also inspired by the wonderful variation of cultures in Suriname. Maroon women
in traditional garb, dancing or at work, traditional elements from my own
Javanese background are particular favorites in my work. Stenciled details are
often added here to provide an elegant and graceful finishing touch.
Composition and details are of great importance. Circles and other geometrical shapes
are used in the background
to strengthen the
composition.
My work is often figurative, but I also experiment
with abstraction. I incorporate lines, curves and other shapes to give a more
constructive and stylized appearance to the work.
