It is important for me to know where I came from, and to be proud of my heritage. Emigrant groups are often viewed less favorable in their residing country. This phenomenon occurs almost everywhere in the world. We do not always have control of how we are viewed as a group, but we can control how we as individuals, deal with these events and more importantly, how we educate our children about this. So I started to make collages about my family, relatives and the places from where I originated. My art works form a certain connection to something precious (the place and people) that with the passing of time I fear, will become nothing but a vague memory. This subject turned out to be a great source of inspiration, for I have discovered that there are endless amounts of ways for me to explore this theme. Over the past years I have developed a way of working which I feel can best be used, to express what I would like to portray through my art namely, ‘keeping records’ of my heritage. The recurring depth, in especially my first paintings, symbolizes the differences between the place where I was born and where I grew up. My current work consists of mixed media collages/paintings and sculptures. I also use colors as a means to emit emotions referring to my theme. The postage stamps sometimes used in my paintings, are of sentimental as well as graphic value to me, as they form a literal and figurative link to my heritage.
